On April 24, the vocal producer of hit motion picture Pitch Perfect and executive producer of NBC’s The Sing-Off, Deke Sharon, will open the inaugural National A Cappella Convention to be held at Briarcrest Christian School in Eads, TN
“There’s always something special in the air when you’re there at the very beginning, and this event promises to be around for a long, long time,” says Sharon. The event will kick off with a concert featuring The Sing-Off’s Acoustikats, internationally touring group MIX, CARA award-winning Fermata Town, and Briarcrest’s own OneVoice.
Chosen by The Commercial Appeal as the “Best Unknown Band” in Memphis in 2013 and hailed as “one of the best a cappella groups…period”, OneVoice has quickly become a high-profile musical entity around the United States under the direction of J.D. Frizzell.
“We are thrilled to host the first ever National A Cappella Convention,” says Frizzell, Director of Fine Arts and Vocal Music at Briarcrest. “Having the finest performers, producers, directors, and arrangers from around the country in one place is a dream come true.”
Saturday night will host both a challenging competition for nationally renowned high school groups including The Sing-Off’s Eleventh Hour from Kettering, OH, reigning International Championship of High School A Cappella winners Highland Voices from Allendale, NJ, Volunteer Voices from Arlington, TX, and Memphis’ own Key of She from White Station High School. Following the high school competition, the audience will be treated to a featured concert from professional a cappella group Musae.
Comprised of singers from groups on The Sing-Off and ICCA Finalists from across the nation, Musae is a powerhouse pop vocal band with a fresh, fun, and funky sound. Skilled music teachers and practitioners, the ensemble is a testament to the strength and dynamism of female voices in an a cappella setting.
The weekend will also provide a highly anticipated opportunity for group masterclasses, roundtable discussions, reading sessions, and a professional exhibition targeted for directors, groups, performers, producers, and educators.
The event is produced by the A Cappella Education Association in partnership with the American Choral Directors Association and The Vocal Company. Tickets and event passes are available at acappellaconvention.com
